DVD Region Code

A 'Region Code' is a way of ensuring that material intended for one region of the globe cannot be viewed on a player from a non-compatible region.

Region Countries
0 No Region Coding
1 United States of America, Canada
2 Europe, including France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa
3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America
5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries
6 Peoples Republic of China
7 Unused
8 Airlines/Cruise Ships
9 Expansion (often used as region free)

Some DVD players have an internal switch setting that allows you to choose the country code. Others have this option hard coded.

There are many forums and websites containing information on how to convert your DVD player to multi-region (e.g. http://www.dvdanswers.com). Most manufacturers, however, will nullify the warranty if you alter the factory settings.
